Leaders like Trump like to call out any critical journalism as “fake news”, but the bigger issue is the way fake stories spread, often through social media, and so often feed into popular myths. Former ODT columnist Mel Bunce now researches and teaches at the Department of Journalism at City, University of London. She has recently published The Broken Estate: Journalism and Democracy in a Post-Truth World.
